Rome, January 24, 2023 – The song Applause, an ode to women around the world from the film Tell it like a woman, composed by Diane Warren and performed by Sofia Carson, has been nominated for ‘Best Original Song’ at the Academy Awards scheduled for 13 March.
The Tell it like a Woman film, for which ‘Applause’ has been composed, is produced by ILBE – Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment and We Do It Together, founded by Chiara Tilesi, is an all-female anthology that showcases women’s courage and determination through seven short films by eight female directors.
“We are very proud and honoured to bring Italy to the Oscars with the song Applause,” says Andrea Iervolino, CEO of ILBE – Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment. This nomination proves that successful films of international scope can be produced in Italy and a sign that Italian cinema is experiencing a growth moment, notably with the Ministry of Culture’s crucial support”.
“I would like to congratulate Diane Warren who, through this beautiful and important song, has given a voice to millions of women around the world,” says Chiara Tilesi, director and producer of We Do It Together (WDIT). “With Sofia Carson’s unmistakable interpretation, the soundtrack aims to be a true celebration of the strength and tenacity of women”.
From Italy to Argentina, from India to the United States via Japan, the directors of Tell it like a woman Maria Sole Tognazzi, Lucía Puenzo, Catherine Hardwicke, Leena Yadav, Mipo O, Taraji P. Henson, Lucia Bulgheroni and Silvia Carobbio have brought stories based on true events to the big screen – as in the case of Pepcy & Kim, a short film centred on the life of Kim Carter, a drug addict with a criminal past who struggles to free herself from her demons, or the episode ‘Elbows Deep’. The short film by Catherine Hardwicke tells the story of a medical director for a Los Angeles center that provides healthcare to the homeless. On the other hand, some short films are based on the scriptwriter’s imagination, as in the case of Sharing a Ride, written by Leena Yadav that tells the story of a self-described progressive woman who encounters a transsexual, an encounter which forces her to examine her unconscious prejudices.
