Produced entirely in Italy, the film was included among the “Oscar Predictions” for the 93rd Academy Awards in five categories

Iervolino Entertainment (“IE”, “the Company”), a company engaged in the production of cinematographic and television content for the international market and listed on the AIM Italia stock exchange, announces that the film Waiting for the Barbarians, produced entirely in Italy by Iervolino Entertainment, Michael Fitzgerald and Olga Segura, has been identified as a possible Oscar candidate by Variety, the renowned American film magazine.

Indeed, the film was included in Variety‘s annual predictions of the films that will be nominated for Academy Awards, whose 93rd edition will be held on 25 April of this year.

Based on Nobel laureate J. M. Coetzee’s award-winning novel of the same name and directed by director and screenwriter Ciro Guerra, Waiting for the Barbarians stars Oscar winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Robert Pattinson (Twilight and The Batman), Gana Bayarsaikhan (Ex Machina) and Greta Scacchi (The Girl in the Fog).

 

According to Variety, Waiting for the Barbarians is one of the possible contenders at the Oscars in five categories1:

Best Actor – Mark Rylance

• Best Costume Design – Carlo Poggioli
• Best Adapted Screenplay – J.M. Coetzee
• Best Production Design – Domenico Sica (production designer), Crispian Sallis (production and set designer)
• Best Cinematography – Chris Menges

Waiting for the Barbarians was presented in 2019 as a film in competition at the 76th Venice International Film Festival, and had already been included among the possible candidates for the Oscar for Best Film for 2020 by IMDb, one of the most authoritative sources of information related to the world of cinema.
